Activities of IG-WRDRR

Conferences/Workshops hosted by IG-WRDRR

IAWE Public Forum at the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction
IAWE will organize a public forum ‘Necessity and Efficiency of Large-Scale Facilities for Wind-Related Disaster Risk Reduction’ at Room C202, Kawauchi-Kita Campus, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, at 13:00 - 18:00, March 16, 2015.
The 5th International Disaster and Risk Conference (IDRC)
IG-WRDRR and IAWE participated in the 5th International Disaster and Risk Conference (IDRC) as endorsing partners. The conference was held in Davos, Switzerland on August 24 - 28, 2014. Y. Tamura made a speech at the session of “Lessons learnt from the Typhoon Haiyan to propose a better strategy to cope with infrequent catastrophic events” on August 26.
Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, 4th Session, UN/ISDR
The UNISDR Scientific and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) organized a Consultation Day Event entitled “Scientific and Technical Platforms / Networks: Achievements and future goals” at the 4th Session of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction on May 20, 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. This event aimed at summarizing the achievement in the past and future goals for disaster risk reduction from the scientific and technical viewpoints. Y. Tamura and S. Cao attended this conference and S. Cao presented on behalf of IG-WRDRR.
Workshop on Tornado Disaster Risk Reduction in Bangladesh
The workshop on Tornado Disaster Risk Reduction in Bangladesh (Program) was held on January 15, 2013 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The main objectives of the workshop were to understand severe local storm disaster risks in various places in the world including Bangladesh; to raise awareness of the risks at local, national, and international levels; and to develop a strategy to reduce risks through active interactions among renowned international, national and local experts. The outcomes of this forum will aid in helping the Government of Bangladesh to adopt policies and develop planning to reduce risks from severe local storms. The outcomes will stimulate donor agencies and NGOs to conduct specific projects to reduce disaster risks. Overall, the forum will contribute to the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action.
Special session on “International Concerted Actions for Wind-Related Disaster Risk Reduction”
A special session on “International Concerted Actions for Wind-Related Disaster Risk Reduction” (PROGRAM) was organized at the 13th International Conference of Wind Engineering held in Amsterdam, in July 2011. Ms. Margareta Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, introduced the disaster reduction activities within the UNISDR framework (PDF). This keynote presentation was followed by a panel discussion with representatives of NGOs, UN/ISDR, WMO and stakeholders. It was expected that this keynote and special session would provide a strong and further impetus to the collaboration between the UN and the IAWE on the very important topic of mitigation of wind-related disasters.

Side event on "Saving of Lives and Improved Coastal Risk Management through Regional Cooperation in Ocean and Marine Related Early Warning Systems in Asia"
Coastal regions are recurrently affected by disasters induced from natural hazards, such as tropical cyclones, storm surges, tsunamis, and coastal flooding. Thus, tackling effective disaster risk management in the coastal regions requires a multi-hazard approach. Asia has been disproportionally affected by these phenomena, experiencing massive devastation which sets back socio-economic development of the countries and coastal communities by years if not decades. However, over the last few decades, significant number of lives and livelihoods were saved through cooperation between governments, regional centers and agencies, NGOs, private sector and the academic community in this region, particularly in the case of tropical cyclones, storm surges and tsunamis. The side event of "Saving of Lives and Improved Coastal Risk Management through Regional Cooperation in Ocean and Marine Related Early Warning Systems in Asia" (FLYER) ) was organized at The third Session of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction on May 10, 2011 in Geneva. This side event demonstrated lessons learned and benefits realized through effective coordination and cooperation in early warning systems with a multi-hazard approach, promotion of effective risk management solutions, and education.

International Symposium on Wind Effects on Buildings and Urban Environment

Recently, the number of severe wind incidents that caused loss of life, serious societal impact and threats to national as well as regional security has been increasing. The effects of rapid urbanization, global warming and climate change are now regarded as indirect causes of these disasters. Rapid urbanization and population concentration from burgeoning economic development in Pacificrim countries have increased energy consumption and worsened air quality as well as thermal comfort in urban environments. In order to tackle these problems, it is essential to reduce energy consumption by utilizing building ventilation and also to reduce air pollution as well as heat pollution by actively promoting urban ventilation. The primary purpose of this symposium, which was coorganized by TPU-GCOE and IG-WRDRR, was to provide an ideal venue for exchanging and sharing information through discussion, so that serious wind-related problems regarding wind hazard risk due to meteorological turbulence such as typhoons and tornadoes, urban air pollution and increase of environmental load can be solved. The forum aimed at contributing to the development and construction of sustainable urban environments with low energy built environments and hence to achieve wind hazard resilient cities. The details of the Symposium including the presentation materials are available from the website of the Symposium.

APEC-WW & IG-WRDRR Joint Workshop and 4AMCDRR Pre-Conference Event
IG-WRDRR was involved in organizing “IG-WRDRR & APEC-WW Joint Workshop on Wind-Related Disaster Risk Reduction Activities and Inter-organizational Collaborations” and “Climate Change and Wind-Related Disaster Risk Reduction Activities in Asia-Pacific Region” in Incheon, Korea, in October 2010. The latter was a Pre-conference event of the 4th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. The details of the Workshop including the presentation materials are available from the website of the Workshop.

The International Forum on Tornado Disaster Risk Reduction for Bangladesh and a Mini-Workshop on Tornado Shelter for Bangladesh

“The International Forum on Tornado Disaster Risk Reduction for Bangladesh - To Cope With Neglected Severe Disasters” in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 13-14 December, 2009 was co-organized by the Tokyo Polytechnic University Global COE Program (TPU-GCOE), the Government of Bangladesh (Disaster Management Bureau, Ministry of Food and Disaster Management, Meteorological Department, Ministry of Defence), the Bangladesh Disaster Preparedness Centre (BDPC) and the International Association for Wind Engineering (IAWE) as the first official event of IG-WRDRR.

As follow-up of the International Forum, IG-WRDRR held several mini-workshops on Tornado Shelter for Bangladesh wiith the cooperation of BDPC and SEEDS Asia.

The details of the Forum including the presentation materials are available from the website of the Forum.
